HISTORY
Mississippi Rapids Tourist Information Center name was influenced by the Mississippi
River and the Rock Island Rapids, which extend upstream for nearly 14 miles from Rock
Island to Le Claire, Iowa. These Rapids had fingers, or chains, of rock extending out
from each shore. In the early 19th century navigation was reduced to four months each
year when the water was high. In 1936 Lock and Dam 14 was constructed, which
submerged the rapids in nine feet of water.
